OKEMOS — Justine Nakunda’s first time on an airplane came this year.
The 13-year-old Ugandan, a student at the Nyaka AIDS Orphans School founded by Okemos resident Jackson Kaguri, has experienced many firsts recently in her journey to recover from burns suffered in an accident with a paraffin lamp.
“This is a wonderful, life-changing treat for her,” Kaguri said.
She recently spent about two weeks in mid-Michigan while recovering from the first in a planned series of surgeries, carried out at Shriners Hospital Burn Center in Boston.
Her visit included attending a meeting of the Rotary Club of East Lansing, whose members welcomed her warmly.

Monday, June 27th, we held our annual Passing of the Gavel ceremony. We are proud to announce our President for the 2011-12 year, Tim McCaffrey. The Rotary Club of East Lansing is pleased to announce the winners in this year’s Art Contest, which was held in conjunction with the Club’s 50th anniversary celebration and planned renovation of the playground structure at East Lansing’s Patriarche Park. The winners, chosen by public voting at the Club’s annual Pancakes-in-the-Park breakfast fundraiser, held on Sunday, June 12, 2011 at Patriarche Park include:- $300 Grand Prize winner: Jing Sojourn (McDonald Middle School – 7th Grade)
– $200 First Prize winner: Clay Conover (McDonald Middle School – 7th Grade)
– $100 Second Prize winner: Jillian Rowan (Stepping Stones Montessori – 2nd Grade)

This year’s art contest was sponsored by the East Lansing Rotary Foundation, East Lansing Lodge 480 of Freemasons, Summit Community Bank and the City of East Lansing.
The East Lansing Rotary Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary of service to the community during 2011. Club members have planned a number of events to commemorate the Club’s golden anniversary, including:
– June 5 – Soccer Match at the East Lansing Soccer Field
– June 12 – Pancakes-in-the-Park breakfast @ Patriarche Park
– June 20 – Blood Drive @ the MSU University Club
– July 14 – Joe Gross Memorial Golf Outing @ Eagle Eye Golf Course in Bath

On Saturday June 4th, the Rotary District Conference recognized Rotarians at the Rotary Heroes Dinner. East Lansing Rotarian Jim Bonfiglio was among 26 honored in the district. Jim Bonfiglio is always ready to serve. He has chaired the Community Service Committee for several years. Under Jim’s leadership, the committee has continued to Club’s Community Grant Program, the Vocational Excellence Awards and our Vocational Visit Program. During his tenure on the Community Service Committee a Student Excellence Award Program was established as well as a plan to recruit students to participate in Rotary Youth Leadership Award Program. Jim has also taken on the assignment of obtaining and maintaining licensing, setting up locations and recruiting volunteers for Charity Poker fund raisers, which have become very successful. Jim is currently active on the Playground In the Park Remember the Park/Revive the Park project as a member of the construction steering committee. He truly is always serving!
